Since we’ve been home, I have now become an expert in changing nappies. And I’ve also learnt a trick or two. I thought I would share with all our readers one of the tips I use to save time when changing Lucas’ nappy.

I have two boxes under the change table that I had full of disposable nappies. I found it was taking a long time when changing baby to make sure all the flaps and bits were unfolded before putting the nappy on. My solution? I unfold the nappies beforehand.

I don’t unfold all of them (I do like folded ones to put in the nappy bag when we are out and about). But this saves so much time, especially at night when you want to keep nappy change times to a minimum.

He’s two days old in this picture. Lucas was born one day early, with a very uneventful labour (it hurt like hell though)!!! He’s very precious. We love him to bits.

I entered an idea although I did not win I did make it into the top 50 and with 1200 other entries I feel this is a big achievement so……..watch this space for my great idea to become a reality.

They were originally white, but I have changed them over the years depending on my mood. I decoupaged (mod podged) some, and crocheted covers for others. They were really starting to get on my nerves with the mismatched colours.

I had some heavyish fabric that I knew would be perfect to recover all the stools so they all looked the same.

I measured the stools to see what size I needed to make the circles. I then cut squares out of the fabric and folded it in half and them half again. I used my tape measure to roughly measure an arc and sketched a curved line onto the fabric. I used my pinking shears to cut out the line.

I opened the fabric up and had a rough circle shape. On the wrong side of the fabric, I used my tape measure and chalk to mark holes one inch from the edge and 5 inches apart. I used the width of the measuring tape as my guide for the hole.

After all the marking, the fabric now looked like this:

I did this for all four circles I needed to cover my stools. For the first one, I used my sewing machine and made buttonholes as the holes. This became too tedious, and as a heavily pregnant woman, I could not be bothered with that at all. I ended up using my pinking shears and cutting holes for the remainder of the circles. This was much easier, and because you don’t see the underneath of the stools, I don’t think it matters.

I chain stitched some black yarn to use as a drawstring for the covers. But you can use anything you have on hand, ribbon, shoelaces, fabric scraps. I turned the stools upside down and took the legs off with a cordless drill. I love using a drill. I placed the seat on top of my fabric and thread the yarn through the holes. I pulled the yarn tight over the stool seat and screwed the legs back on.

It is so easy to recover your old stools, and it’s an easy way to give your home a lift.
